Managing Facebook catalog ads can be frustrating for the uninitiated, and facing a constant stream of errors and warnings can be enough to make you give up entirely.

Fortunately, there are a lot of good strategies for troubleshooting the problems. Meta Business Help Center can walk you through your issues, and with a thorough understanding of the Issues Tab you may never have to visit it again.

Facebook Catalog Ads: Common Problems and Solutions

Facebook has long been a pivotal platform for businesses aiming to showcase their products directly to users. The sheer variety of ad options can be confusing, but catalogs make light work of highlighting an entire product or service line. However, like any powerful tool, Facebook catalog ads come with their own set of challenges.

While some of these problems are minor and can be addressed with a bit of exploration, others require a deep dive. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the Meta Business Help Center, which will have brief but valuable answers to common questions.

But the Help Center alone isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Following these abbreviated help articles can be challenging, especially if you’re just starting out. If you’re floundering in a dizzying array of Facebook catalog ad errors, we’re here to help you tackle the most common problems. First, let’s demystify the Issues Tab, where you can investigate and resolve all your catalog inconsistencies.

Navigating and Understanding the Issues Tab

The Issues Tab in Commerce Manager is a central hub for advertisers to identify and solve problems associated with their items. You should regularly check this tab to ensure potential customers always see accurate and up-to-date information about your offerings.

To reach the Issues Tab, log in to your Facebook account and navigate to the Commerce Manager. Next, open the Catalog tab and go to Issues. This is where you’ll see all the catalog-related problems under a few primary categories:

  1. Catalog: Issues with specific catalog items, like missing a required field or noncompliance with Meta’s policies.
  2. Data sources: Problems with the sources connected to your catalog, like a data feed or Meta Pixel used to add items.
  3. Events: Errors related to pixels or app SDKs connected to your catalog.
  4. Features: Checkout-related issues on Facebook, like missing a required information field.

Each of these problems will have a severity level: error or warning. Errors are marked in red and indicate severe issues that prevent items from uploading to your catalog and appearing in ads. Warnings are yellow, less serious, and don’t stop your ads from showing up. However, while they don’t keep items from appearing in ads or sales channels, they likely affect the quality of your catalog.

Once you’ve pinpointed any issues, Facebook offers a straightforward method to understand and solve them. Start by clicking “Review” next to the problem, highlighting a detailed pop-up. Note that if your items are not showing up at all, there are many possible causes. It’s best to consult the related Help Page if you’re stuck.

For items with missing or incorrect details, you can create a CSV report by selecting “Download Report.” This can guide your corrections or be shared with a team member (like your ad agency or a developer). Ensure this person has the “Manage Catalog” permission to make changes.

Items that Don’t Display

If your items are rejected for failing to meet Meta’s ad policies, you can request a review. Be sure to read through the terms beforehand, however. If your items break Meta’s rules, there’s little chance they will be restored. In that case, it’s best to revise your listing or determine whether Meta’s platforms are the right choice for this specific product.

Lastly, if there’s a problem with event tracking, selecting “Review” will direct you to your pixel’s settings in the Events tab. You’ll see which events aren’t being tracked accurately, which should help you determine if you need to update the pixel or SDK code on your website or app.

Integrating Platforms with Facebook Catalogs

If you’re already using a Meta-partnered commerce platform, you can benefit from a more streamlined workflow for catalog ads. Platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce (among others) can directly sync with Facebook to ensure that any updates made to your store automatically update in your catalog.

Remember that while the integration simplifies the process, Facebook recommends managing your catalog primarily from your partner platform. Any manual changes made directly from Commerce Manager might be overwritten during your next sync, so stick to the partner’s catalog for updates. Similarly, errors must be fixed on the partner platform, not Commerce Manager.

The main benefit of linking your partner platform to Facebook catalog Ads is that users will automatically see up-to-date information based on your latest offerings, prices, and tags. Instead of having to set up items multiple times, you’ll only do it once on your chosen platform. This saves time and makes it easier to track where problems arise (and how to solve them).
